SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Korea Bizwire) — Dongbu HiTek, a Dongbu Group company specializing in the analog and mixed-signal foundry business, said on August 26 that it has developed a new touch screen chip that can run applications on a standby mode.

The main difference between the existing touch screen chips and the one developed by Dongbu HiTek is that the existing ones could open apps with a touch of the screen when it is turned off while the latest chip can allow the user to activate apps and use different functionalities.

Let’s take a music player app as an example: if the user touches the smartphone’s screen on a standby mode by drawing a circle or any other signs, the music player app can play right away, replaying the songs. There is no need to release the lock and select the app to play the music.

Music player apps don’t need to be turned on to play music. By playing the music app with the screen turned off, one can save electricity consumption. The user also doesn’t need to look into the screen to adjust the volume or play the next song, thereby enhancing user convenience.

A Dongbu HiTek official said, “We have applied for patents for the touch screen chip we have developed recently in Korea and elsewhere. We are in talks with major smartphone manufacturers for possible supply deals. We are hopeful that the response has been enthusiastic so far.”

According to market research firm IHS, the touch screen chip market will be US$2.3 billion by the end of this year, up 21 percent from the previous year. By 2017, it is projected to grow to $2.8 billion, with an annual average growth rate of 11 percent until then.
