SEOUL, Nov. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The cumulative number of eco-friendly car registrations has passed the 1.5 million mark in South Korea.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the number of eco-friendly car registrations stood at 1.52 million vehicles at the end of October, up 38.3 percent from a year ago.
The milestone was achieved 14 months after the 1 million hurdle was surpassed in July 2021.
Eco-friendly vehicles include all-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell electric, plug-in hybrid and gasoline hybrid models.
The cumulative number of car registrations surpassed the 500,000 mark in April 2019.
The share of eco-friendly cars among the nation’s total car registrations rose to 5.96 percent, up from 0.70 percent in late 2014, 3.37 percent in 2020, and 4.65 percent in 2021.
Among the 1.52 million eco-friendly cars, hybrid cars accounted for 1.12 million units, followed by electric cars at 365,000 units and hydrogen cars at 27,000 units.
Hybrid cars marked positive year-on-year growth of 29.6 percent, while electric cars and hydrogen cars were up 72.7 percent and 54.3 percent, respectively.
The cumulative number of electric car registrations shot up to 231,000 units in 2021 from 134,000 units in late 2020.
