SEOUL, Dec. 21 (Korea Bizwire) Seoul’s Gangnam District said Tuesday it will expand its childbirth and postnatal care subsidies next year.

The district has been giving out 300,000 won (US$233) for the firstborn and 1 million won for the second-born child. Starting in January of next year, all parents of newborn children will receive 2 million won.

Parents will receive 3 million won for their third child and 5 million won for their fourth child and more.

Including a separate 2 million won voucher provided by the government for all newborn children, residents of Gangnam District will receive a total of 4 million won for their firstborn, which is the highest amount among all districts in Seoul.

“First and second-born children account for more than 95 percent of all children born in the district,” an official at the district office said. “We decided to expand subsidies believing that this could be a better help for families with newborn children.”

The district also decided to expand the scope of potential applicants for the postnatal care subsidies, and increase the amount from 300,000 won per session to 1 million won per session.
