SEOUL, Jun. 28 (Korea Bizwire)With the rise of the #MeToo movement earlier in the year came heightened awareness of sexual abuse, and the government’s decision to reveal information regarding such violence has attracted significant attention by the public.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), a government website that featured a map that indicated the locations at which sexual violence took place saw 296,127 hits between January and May of this year.

The Korea Safety Map (www.safemap.go.kr) indicates an array of information totaling 239 categories such as crime scenes, traffic accident locations and shelter whereabouts, in addition to other information.

On the map, users can also check for areas where sexual violence has been occurring frequently.

In addition to the map indicating sexual violence, users also sought information on violence (96,897 hits), robberies (78,004 hits) and other public safety-related issues.

In addition, users of the website also searched for the location of convenience stores, clinics, and firefighting facilities to prepare for emergency situations.

The MOIS is planning to provide the maps to school teachers so that they can be used for safety education classes.

Meanwhile, the MOIS will be holding a quiz on its website to promote its services for a duration of four months, which will kick off on June 28.

A total of 240 people who answer the quiz correctly will be randomly chosen to receive mobile coupons.

Kim Seok-jin, the chief of the safety policy division at the MOIS, said that the government will be communicating with the public continuously so that the map can actually be of service to those in need.

“We will be strengthening our cooperation with our data providers so that the service continues to be sustainable,” said Kim.
