BUSAN, April 10 (Korea Bizwire) —The Busan Nambu Police Station reported on Monday that they have arrested four individuals, including a delivery driver, and booked nine others without detention for violating the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act by illegally copying credit cards handed over by customers.
Delivery driver A and others are accused of using a card duplication device to copy credit cards provided by customers who ordered food between September and December last year. They then allegedly used the copied cards to purchase precious metals and spent them on entertainment expenses. A total of 34 credit cards were copied without permission, with some customers being charged a total of 17 million won without their consent.
The police revealed that A and others carried a cloning device separately from the card payment machine, and would first copy the card using the device and then make a payment using the actual payment machine, pretending to change the device to deceive customers.
The police were alerted to the crime after a customer reported suspicious behavior by the delivery driver carrying two card terminals. They explained that cloning devices can replicate information from the magnetic stripe of a card, and that cards with only IC chips are more secure.
The Nambu Police Station plans to suggest improvements to the financial authorities, such as restricting magnetic card payments and promoting the use of high-security IC chips to prevent further incidents.
