SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Environment announced that it will publish a white paper on the Low Impact Development (LID) method that can prevent unabsorbed pools of rainwater from contaminating the water supply and help circulation of the water network in the city.

In large cities, asphalt and concrete prevents rain from being absorbed into the ground, which can cause flooding and the depletion of groundwater.

In some cases, pools of unabsorbed rainwater enter roads or construction sites, mixing with contaminants before they enter and contaminate local waterways.

LID is a method that artificially absorbs raindrops to prevent such cases.

The ministry built LID facilities at the Ochang Science Industrial Complex and Jeonju’s Seogok Village between 2013 and 2015 and tested their effectiveness until last year.

Results showed that rainwater mixed with contaminants 24.1 percent less in Ochang, and 8.6 percent less in Jeonju, contained 21 percent less contaminants in Ochang and 13.1 percent less in Jeonju, and led to a 5.06 percent increase in the groundwater recharge rate in Ochang, and a 2.96 percent increase in Jeonju.
