SEOUL, Feb. 16 (Korea Bizwire) – The Cabinet approved a law revision Tuesday to toughen the punishment for taxi drivers who rip off passengers.
Under the revision, a taxi driver who is caught three times for overcharging a customer will face the maximum punishment of having his business license nullified.
Previously, a taxi driver who was caught overcharging a passenger for the first time was subject to license revocation for 60 days, a second-time offender for 90 days, and a third-time offender for 180 days.
The revision still needs approval from the National Assembly to take effect.
The Cabinet also endorsed another revision stipulating that a taxi driver who is caught not putting up a license inside a cab faces a fine of 100,000 won (US$82).
The change is part of the government’s efforts to root out nagging unfair practices by local cabs to overcharge customers, especially foreign tourists.’
