GWANGJU, Apr. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — This summer, following the FINA (International Swimming Federation) World Championships, a special swimming competition open only to dogs will be held in Gwangju.
The ‘pet swimming’ competition is attracting much attention as it is the first time for a local government and public organization to officially hold this type of event.
The city of Gwangju announced on Tuesday the date of the competition.
In August, the city plans to open a one-day competition by setting up a swimming pool at Chosun University Football Field or in front of Gwangju river.
The city will organize various events including speed swimming and retrieving underwater items, as well as campaigns for adopting abandoned pets, promoting animal registration systems, free medical treatment and counseling for pets, and displaying related industrial products.
Gwangju is expecting spinoffs from creating an atmosphere for swimming competitions, preventing pet abandonment and establishing a positive pet culture.
The company operating the event, for which 100 million won (US$88,000) has been budgeted, will be chosen through a public tender in April.
