Homegrown Technology to Measure Eye Fatigues to Become Int’l Standard

SEOUL, Aug. 21 (Korea Bizwire) – A Korea-developed method for measuring the degree of eye fatigue from 3D video exposure is likely to become an international standard. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards said on August 20 that the assessment method to measure eye fatigues on 3D images developed by Korean scientists would be adopted by the U.S.-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as a standard.

Unlike the conventional method relying on subjective evaluation used for 2D images, the newly developed method makes concurrent use of auditory, visual, and tactile senses. The gist of the method was proven effective by being published in an IEEE journal. The methodology will be freely available without licensing fees.

In addition, another standard for 3D medical modeling and simulation developed by Korean scientists will be given approval by the IEEE soon. The standard will allow doctors to perform surgeries with images just like they see with their own naked eyes, unlike the vague images of computerized tomography (CT scan) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI scan). The standards have been developed by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the sponsorship of the industry ministry.
