SEOUL, June 29 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Mobis Co., South Korea’s leading auto parts maker, has unveiled a demonstration of the world’s first rollable display designed for automobiles.
The demonstration of the display, held on Monday at the Media Tech Day at the company’s R&D center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, showed the display slowly rising from the device, resembling a printer printing a sheet of paper.
When the display expanded to a 30-inch screen, it was large enough to watch a movie on.
The size of the rollable display can be changed freely according to the driving situation and the purpose of its use. It can be expanded without spatial limitations to efficiently make use of a car’s indoor space.
Han Young-hoon, head of the Electronic Convenience & Control Lab at Hyundai Mobis, said that the display was capable of changing in size according to various needs, adding, “It fits nicely into the rising trend of software-defined vehicles.”
With the realization of software-defined vehicles (SDV), in which self-driving levels and infotainment systems can be upgraded through wireless software updates, a sizable screen will become essential to make use of the expansive space.
Hyundai Mobis also introduced an augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD), which is being jointly developed with British holographic head-up display startup Envisics, a digital hologram startup.
The company emphasized that an AR HUD will be capable of screening information without blocking the driver’s line of sight, thanks to its field of view and vari-focusing technology.
Vari-focusing technology reduces the risk of accidents by aligning the focus of the driver’s sight on the road and screen.
At the event, a swivel display, developed a year earlier than the rollable display, was also revealed. It is a 34-inch variable display capable of moving vertically.
