SEOUL, March 24 (Korea Bizwire) – Sales of jelly dessert products are booming, particularly among Koreans over 40, a new market research report published yesterday found.

The market for jelly desserts grew by 54 percent on year last year, amounting to 153.3 billion won, according to AC Nielson Korea.

This year, the market is expected to grow up to around 200 billion won.

E-mart saw sales of jelly products jump 57.6 percent last year, making the biggest leap among confectionery products. Given the average sales growth rate of 6.6 percent for snack foods, the newly found popularity of jelly desserts is worth noting.

Behind the growing popularity of jelly products are customers over the age of 40, who seem to have a newly developed taste for the desserts made of gelatin.

“Jelly used to be seen as a dessert for kids, but the fact that it’s low-calorie and its softness is easy on the teeth is gaining popularity among those aged over 40,” an official from E-mart explained.

Of all jelly product sales at E-mart, buyers over the age of 40 accounted for nearly 60 percent. At the same time, other types of desserts such as chewing gum and candies took a hit, with sales decreasing 3.3 and 10.2 percent respectively.
