SEOUL, April 19 (Korea Bizwire) — On the afternoon of April 19, members of the Korea Metalworkers’ Union marched from Hangang-daero in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, towards Sungnyemun Gate to protest against the government’s labor policies, which include the reform of working hours and the introduction of a job performance wage system.
The day before, the union, affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, held a press conference on the front steps of Sejong Cultural Center in Seoul, where they demanded that the government dismiss the Minister of Employment and Labor, put an end to union repression, and withdraw the proposed legislation to expand working hours. The union set a deadline of the 4th of next month for the government to respond to their demands, threatening a general strike if they fail to do so.
