Liability Insurance a Must for Owners of Fierce Dogs

SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Korea Bizwire)With new animal protection laws coming into effect this Friday, owners of fierce dogs will now be obligated to get liability insurance, the Seoul city government said.

Any violation will be punished by a fine of up to 3 million won (US$2,700).

South Korea categorizes Tosas, American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, rottweilers and other related mixed breeds as fierce dogs.

Owners of fierce dogs will be required to obtain liability insurance to compensate for the damages caused by the dogs to others and their property.

The new law also requires pet vendors to register the pet under the name of the buyer. Failing to do so may be result in a seven-day business suspension.
