SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – Lotte Engineering & Construction has successfully developed a technology to make concrete that effectively blocks radiation. Separately it has also developed a new construction technique to strengthen the bearing capacity of bored precast piles.
The company said on December 16 that it filed a patent on the 4th to make concrete that can block out 99 percent of radiation with 25 centimeters of thickness. A company official explained that the new technology is eco-friendly as it mixes steel slag and high-density polyethylene with concrete. It will use the new technology in building radiology hospital structures and radioactive waste storage and transport facilities.
The pile-strengthening technique (called the “smart pile” technique) that Lotte E&C has developed jointly with Pileworks, Dongbu Engineering & Construction, and Hanshin Engineering has been designated as a “technique of the month” on December 9 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The technique has increased the strength of the pile supporting capacity by attaching a steel pipe slightly shorter than the length of the PHC (pre-stressed high-strength concrete) pile.
