SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Korea Bizwire) – President Moon Jae-in held summit talks with Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis on Tuesday and discussed ways to expand trade and investment between the two countries and increase cooperation on security issues like North Korea, officials said.
Moon, in particular, asked for Latvia’s support for his efforts to build on the conciliatory mood formed between the two Koreas on the occasion of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics to create the conditions for denuclearization talks, officials said.
Noting that Vejonis is the first Latvian president to visit South Korea since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1991, Moon called for using the visit as an opportunity to further enhance relations with Latvia.
Vejonis said in response he hopes the relations will be strengthened with a focus on trade and investment.
The two leaders also welcomed an agreement to launch a joint economic commission between South Korea and the three Baltic states, and agreed to use the commission to explore ways to strengthen substantial cooperation in various areas.
Vejonis arrived in South Korea on Thursday and attended the Olympic’s opening ceremony the following day. His trip also includes a ceremony to relocate the Latvian Embassy, a Korea-Latvia business forum and a visit to South Korean companies.
