SEOUL, July 26 (Korea Bizwire) — Swarms of a previously unheard-of insect, named lovebug, erupted in Seoul’s northwest last month and swept across the entire city.
However, these lovebugs have mostly disappeared now due to their short lifespan and heavy rain.
Park Seon-jae, a researcher from the National Institute of Biological Resources, reported that female lovebugs live for up to one week, while male lovebugs live for only three days.
“Lovebugs emerge once a year, so they will be back next year,” Park said.
With the absence of lovebugs, mosquitoes are now taking over the scene.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the mosquito trap index in cities across the country reached 68.2 units from July 2 to 8.
This represents a 10.2 percent increase from the average between 2018 and 2022, or a 98.5 percent increase from last year.
