SEOUL, Jun. 20 (Korea Bizwire)SK Energy and GS Caltex are joining hands to create a parcel delivery service utilizing the two companies’ existing network of gas stations.

In addition to the collaboration, the joint venture has new meaning, experts say, because of the willingness by SK and GS to share key corporate infrastructure with consumers, creating social value for the public at large.

SK Energy and GS Caltex jointly revealed today that the two companies initiated a research study in April of this year on how to unite their key assets to create new value.

“As our first cooperative model, we have decided to start a parcel delivery service based on a customer-to-customer system,” said a joint statement released today.

The new service named “Homepick” will allow customers to send deliveries to other persons, and company officials are hoping it will rectify the problems associated with the business-to-business delivery services that currently dominate the market.

Existing delivery systems, when utilized by individuals, are time consuming and require individuals to travel to the dispatch station to physically drop off their desired deliveries.

Homepick will be able to change all that by linking consumers online to nearby delivery agents.

After consumers apply for a pickup through various channels such as Naver, Kakao, CJ Logistics as well as Homepick’s own website (www.homepick.com), an employee from a third-party startup will visit the customer’s home and drop off the parcel at a nearby gas station.

A delivery person from CJ Logistics will later pick up and deliver the merchandise to its destination.

SK and GS have started operations on a trial basis this month in Seoul. In September, the service will be expanded nation-wide.

One Homepick employee said that the service will help lessen the burden for existing parcel service businesses while increasing efficiency.

“Customers will be able to expect faster delivery without having to visit the post office or convenience stores,” said the employee.

In addition, experts say the new business venture is also good news for gas stations formerly limited to just gas sales and car wash services.

It may even lead to other more profitable ideas that utilize the various business channels and outlets.
