SEOUL, Jul. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — Six months have passed since the “Lemon Law” went into effect, but the number of applications from consumers was found to be very low and some import car companies refused to abide by the conditions imposed.
The Citizens’ Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ) issued a statement Monday saying that only nine applications for exchange and refund had been filed during the six-month period since January of this year when the law took effect.
The CCEJ pointed out that under the Lemon Law, all applications for exchange and refund could have been filled out and send out by mail.
It also reported 880 million won (US$753,600) was set aside as a budget with only six employees assigned to deal with any complaints.
In addition, as of May 27, 10 imported car brands including Audi and Volkswagen still did not abide by the Lemon Law.
Some even pointed out the transparency of a government-led experts committee, which mediates exchange and refund decisions and reviews the rectification of faults.
According to the announcement by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the meeting of the government-led experts committee should be made public in principle, and the results of the meeting should be disclosed on its website, but it was not doing so, the CCEJ said.
