SEOUL, Mar. 1 (Korea Bizwire) –Pengsoo, the beloved character from EBS who was once acclaimed ‘Children’s President’, is set to participate in a walkathon organized by the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity.
The event, aimed at raising awareness about obesity prevention and management, will be held on March 3 at Neulbut Park Stadium in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in commemoration of ‘World Obesity Day’ on March 4.
The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity announced that this health walk is part of efforts to highlight the importance of combating obesity and fostering a culture of healthy living.
The 3.2 km course, which begins at Neulbut Park and loops back from Yeongdong Bridge along Yangjae Stream, is open to anyone interested in walking, including medical professionals specializing in obesity, patients, and their families.
The participation of Pengsoo is expected to draw significant attention to the event. The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity has reported an increase in registrations following the announcement of Pengsoo’s involvement.
World Obesity Day, established in 2015 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Obesity Federation (WOF), is a global campaign aimed at promoting a better understanding of obesity and improving prevention and treatment measures.
This year’s campaign, themed ‘BMI 2024′, encourages maintaining a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 20-24 throughout the year, below the obesity threshold of 25.
Following the success of last year’s event, this year’s walkathon will again focus on adults with obesity-related conditions such as diabetes.
The event will also feature educational programs on maintaining a healthy weight and managing obesity for attendees interested in assessing their obesity levels and related metabolic disorders.
Park Cheol-yeong, president of the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity and a professor at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, emphasized the impact of obesity not only as a condition but also in exacerbating difficulties due to associated diseases.
He expressed hope that the walkathon would encourage wider public empathy for the challenges faced by those with obesity and underscore the significance of obesity prevention and management.
