SEOUL, Aug. 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Among automobiles damaged by the record-setting deluge that hit Seoul recently, the proportion of sedans exceeded SUVs.
A local general insurance company received 3,200 damage reports for sedans between Aug. 8-17, accounting for 75.6 percent of all reports, industry sources said.
In contrast, there were only 737 damage reports for SUVs and vans, accounting for a mere 17.4 percent. Excluding tertiary types of vehicles, 4 in 5 damaged cars were sedans.
Experts argue that this is primarily because the air inlet for sedans, used to supply oxygen to the engine, are located at a lower position than in SUVs.
Air inlets are normally located on top of the car’s front grill. Once water enters an air inlet, most vehicles end up with a dead engine.
If the water rises above the tires, however, the risk of a dead engine rises for both sedans and SUVs.
