SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Korea Bizwire) – Twenty-year-olds spend much more time on social media now than the same age group a decade ago, whereas their monthly reading time declined, a report showed Monday.

The Korean Educational Development Institute surveyed 5,705 people who turned 20 in 2021, and about 23 percent of them said they use social media for an average of three to five hours a week, while about 17 percent said they use social media for about six to 10 hours.

In a similar survey, only 6.7 percent of the 4,850 people who turned twenty in 2011 said they spend six to 10 hours on social media, the report showed.

The percentage of those who said they do not use social media dropped sharply from 47.08 percent recorded in 2011 to 11.96 percent, the report showed.

Meanwhile, the percentage of those who said they read less than one book a month rose to about 38 percent in 2021 from the roughly 25 percent mark a decade ago.
