SEOUL, July 23 (Korea Bizwire) — In response to the mistranslation of kimchi as Chinese “pao cai,” the South Korean government has announced the official Chinese word for kimchi as “shinchi.”
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that new guidelines for the translation of Korean will take effect on Thursday.
In the new instructions, “pao cai” has been deleted from example sentences for translations of kimchi into Chinese with the aim of properly distinguishing kimchi from the Chinese dish.
The government’s decision also reflected demand from the food industry to come up with a proper Chinese term for kimchi.
