SEOUL, March 29 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s overseas aid agency has built an infectious disease treatment ward in Fiji, an island country in the South Pacific Ocean that has had difficulties dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic due to limited access to public health services.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Monday held an opening ceremony for an isolation center it set up within P.J. Twomey Tamavua Hospital in Suva, the capital of Fiji.
KOICA expects the ward to contribute to strengthening Fiji’s infectious disease prevention capability and emergency medical response system, thereby enabling more than 10,000 patients to benefit from it per year.
After classifying Fiji — where tens of hundreds of people have died from dengue fever and typhoid resulting from natural disasters such as cyclones, landslides and floods — as a climate change vulnerable country, KOICA has provided a wide range of support in the public health area.
For this year, KOICA also plans to donate ten emergency vehicles to help Fiji strengthen its emergency medical response system.
