SEOUL, March 24 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean authorities will lift restrictions on the minimum storage space of small trucks and create a new standard to allow production of small-sized fire and garbage trucks.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced plans for new legislation on the categorization of legal vehicles on Tuesday, which will take effect starting in May.
Currently, the minimum storage space required for small trucks is more than 2 square meters, which is identical to normal-sized trucks. The restriction has made it technologically impossible to produce small trucks.
In response, the government decided to alleviate the restriction to 1 square meter and create a new category of small vehicles designed for special purposes to meet the demands of a slimmer, narrower urban structure and traffic.
The current categorization of vehicles does not permit the production of small vehicles designed for special purposes, such as miniature-sized fire or garbage trucks easily found in Europe.
Only mini-sized passenger cars or trucks are available for manufacturing.
