DAEJEON, May 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The state-run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has announced plans to develop new technology for a one-stop security inspection that uses terahertz waves to eliminate the need for individuals to take off their shoes.
The technology would enable the inspection of dangerous materials such as explosives and deadly weapons without the need to take off shoes or hats at airport security checkpoints.
The ETRI will also develop technology that would enable a rapid check of whether dangerous materials are possessed or not on a non-face-to-face basis by applying high resolution artificial intelligence (AI) image recognition technology.
The institute is aiming to acquire domestic certification in 2025 after developing a trial product by 2024 and demonstrating it at Incheon International Airport.
