SEOUL, Jul. 1 (Korea Bizwire)In 2029, ten years down the road, South Korea’s female population is expected to surpass that of men.

The “gender ratio,” or the number of men per 100 women, is expected to hit 99.9 in 2029, when the record will be broken for the first time, according to data released Sunday by Statistics Korea.

The tendency of a declining male population will continue. It was predicted that the sex ratio would not rebound until 2047, resulting in a ratio of 98.3, as the estimated results show.

Statistics Korea attributed the reversal of the male and female population to the diminishing importance of the male preference ideology and the relatively longer life span of women amid an aging population.

With the growing female population, women’s economic activities, which have been steadily increasing recently, are also expected to become more active.

As the government has steadily pushed for a policy to achieve a work-life balance for female workers, job-related indicators for women have been steadily improving recently.

Last month, the number of employed women stood at 11.78 million, resulting in a 54.2 percent labor force participation rate and 52.2 percent employment to population ratio, which were both new records.

The growing female population and the increase in the participation of women in economic activities will continue further into the future on the condition of no particular external economic shocks.
