SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s 5G subscribers exceeded exceeded the 25 million milestone just three years and three months since 5G services were launched, data showed Thursday.
The Ministry of Science and ICT reported that there were over 25.1 million 5G subscriptions as of July.
5G accounted for 33.3 percent of all mobile subscriptions but 72.4 percent in terms of overall online traffic.
4G LTE accounted for 62.5 percent of all mobile subscriptions but no more than 27.6 percent in terms of overall online traffic.
5G subscribers used an average of 27.9 gigabytes (GB) of traffic in July, while LTE subscribers used only 8.4 GB.
“Users with access to ultra-high-definition (UHD) and other high-quality content look for faster mobile plans and early adopters are switching to devices that support 5G,” an industry source said.
“5G-exclusive content like extended reality (XR) uses up even more data.”
