SEOUL, March 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will apply Internet of Things (IoT) technology to “green parking,” parking spaces created by tearing down residential walls.
Through this initiative, the city plans to expand real-time parking sharing services so that individuals can share empty parking places and gain additional income.
The green parking space project, which was introduced in 2004 to help ease parking difficulties in residential areas, is an initiative of the SMG in which construction costs are subsidized if parking spaces are created by tearing down the walls that border a residential property.
Last year, the SMG launched a service to share green parking spaces using IoT technology.
The service is designed to install IoT sensors and CCTV cameras at parking spaces to check whether a vehicle is in use or not and share the information with a smartphone application.
Users can make a reservation from an empty parking space and complete payment at once. The parking space provider then receives a portion of the revenue.
Citizens who wish to participate in the real-time parking sharing service can apply with their respective boroughs.
The city had built a total of 56,681 parking spaces through the green parking creation project as of last year.
