SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday it will collect coffee grounds from downtown cafes for recycling.
The city plans to offer certified marks and other incentives to encourage coffee shops to throw away coffee grounds separately, collect them through district offices and send them to a recycling firm.
The new coffee grounds recycling system will allow cafes to save on the cost of trash bags and offer jobs to vulnerable groups.
Coffee grounds are typically incinerated or buried due to a lack of recycling demand and difficulty in separation.
As much as 145 tons of coffee grounds are produced in Seoul’s coffee shops every day, the city government said.
