SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will offer financial support for animal funerals to low-income earners for the next two years, starting in May.
The recipients of basic welfare income and low-income earners will be eligible to receive kits from the city to carry the deceased pet, as well as subsidies for a funeral.
Three animal funeral services company in Gyeonggi Province are offering a 50,000 won (US$41.26) discount for an animal funeral. Local pet funeral service provider 21gram plans to give away more than 3,000 animal retrieval kits for free every year.
The city also plans to carry out projects to educate the public on the proper procedures for taking care of a deceased animal and raise public awareness about the culture of animal funerals.
“The current legislation that allows dead pets to be thrown away in a trash bag doesn’t reflect how citizens are treating their pets today. With no animal funeral services available inside the city, however, we have decided to first come up with plans to assist citizens in holding funerals for their pets,” the city government said.
