SEOUL, March 19 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on March 18 that it will significantly expand its low-sugar school meal initiative from two to 100 schools, aiming to promote healthier eating habits among students.

Following a successful pilot program at two schools last year, the city is now accepting applications until March 24 from elementary, middle, and high schools interested in participating in the expanded program. All public and private schools within Seoul are eligible to apply.

Schools can submit their applications through official channels or email to the city’s Food Policy Division, with application forms available on the Seoul city website. Each selected school will receive a grant of 1 million won to implement the low-sugar program starting in April.

A key component of the initiative is a program that will provide low-sugar meals on the fifth day of each month, along with educational materials about reducing sugar consumption. Schools will also participate in the “Less Sweet 9988″ campaign through customized programs, including student challenges and club activities promoting healthy eating habits.

“Through these low-sugar practice schools, we will actively support teenagers in reducing their sugar intake and maintaining healthy dietary habits,” said Kim Tae-hee, head of Seoul’s Citizens’ Health Bureau.
