CHEONAN, Nov. 13 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) announced Thursday that it has developed a contactless jumping fitness system that replicate at home the experience of working out at a gym.

While demand for home training is increasing due to the coronavirus, it is not easy to regularly exercise alone.

Jumping fitness is a new form of exercise popular in Europe and the United States. It involves 20 to 30 people each jumping on a one-person trampoline led by an instructor.

The research team added motion detection technology and various content to enable users to enjoy jumping fitness at home.

The system uses Microsoft’s Azure Kinect, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based motion detection device, to compare the user’s exercise posture with a professional instructor to come up with a score.

A camera monitors foot shadows depicted beneath the trampoline to locate where the foot has landed, and how deep it went, to calculate the force of the leap and the quantity of calories burned.

By connecting to an online network, users can join with others to engage in exercise together.

“The system can also be used as rehabilitation device for the elderly and the disabled,” said Dr. Lee Soo-woong from KITECH.
