SEOUL, Jul. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – A recent survey conducted by KB Kookmin Card has shed light on South Koreans’ attitudes towards summer vacations, revealing a nation split on the necessity of travel.

The study, released on July 25, found that 56.6% of respondents believe “travel is necessary” during the summer break, while 43.4% feel it is not essential.

The survey, which polled 500 men and women aged 20 to 59 in the Seoul metropolitan area, delved into the motivations behind these contrasting views. Among those who favored travel, 29% cited the opportunity to “escape daily life and relieve stress” as their primary reason.

On the other hand, of those who deemed travel unnecessary, 39.6% pointed to overcrowding during peak season as their main concern.

The study also revealed generational differences in vacation preferences. Respondents in their 20s favored culinary tourism, while those in their 30s and 50s prioritized rest, relaxation, and healing experiences. Nature and landscape appreciation topped the list for those in their 40s.

For domestic travel plans, Gangwon Province emerged as the most popular destination, with 46.3% of respondents indicating it as their top choice. The Busan-Ulsan-South Gyeongsang region followed at 20.1%, with Incheon-Gyeonggi at 17.4% and Jeju Island at 16.2%.

When asked about the ideal duration for a domestic summer vacation, 47% of respondents preferred a three-day, two-night trip. This was followed by four-day, three-night stays at 26.5%, and two-day, one-night getaways at 17.4%.

Beaches and coastal areas proved to be the most popular vacation spots, with 42.8% of respondents expressing a preference for these locations. Water parks came in second at 27.2%.
