SEOUL, Aug. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — With the likes of Kakao Bank and K-Bank stirring up a storm in the South Korean banking industry, traditional banks are flocking to recruit IT professionals to jump on the online bandwagon.

Following the success of online-only banks in recent months that seems to be reshaping the landscape of online banking in South Korea, major banks including Woori, Citibank and KEB Hana Bank are ditching their previously misplaced focus on physical branches and increasing online efforts to prevent new rivals from taking their clients away.

Woori Bank is currently employing experts including digital business planners and others in the fields of artificial intelligence, big data and blockchain technology until next month, in order to bolster its online and mobile banking services.

Citibank Korea, which has been shifting its business focus from offline to online over the last few months, closing a total of 90 branches, is also looking for IT experts to get on board with the trend of going all digital.

Dubbed ‘digital stars’, the group will be given the opportunity to attend forums and seminars as well as participate in training programs, all of which will help them come up with innovative digital business ideas.

Apart from the talent nurturing scheme, KEB Hana Bank earlier this year signed a business contract with seven fintech startup companies including MindsLab to collaborate on developing new business initiatives.
