GANGNEUNG, March 6 (Korea Bizwire) — Messages from Olympics athletes back home thanking the people of Gangneung for handmade postcards with handwritten messages inscribed and “Welcome to Gangneung” lamps are generating interest among the general public.

French skier Marie Martinod and Danish curling skip Madeleine Dupont recently reached out to Gangneung via e-mail.

“The welcome gift was so heartwarming; I will cherish it for a long time. Thank you for the warm welcome, and my gratitude to the people who made the gift,” the email read.

Martinod also took a photo of her silver medal won at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics next to the gift lamp and sent the picture to the lamp's maker, 45-year-old Kim Hye-jeong of Gangneung. (Image: Yonhap)

Kim was one of many Gangneung citizens who starting in October 2016 began to craft the gift lamps for visiting Olympic athletes and media personnel. A total of 17,500 were completed and gifted to visitors.

Around 7,000 lamps were presented to the head of the foreign media delegation in late January by Gangneung mayor Choi Myeong-hee, and 9,000 or so were later delivered to athletes in the Gangneung athletes’ village.
