SEOUL, April 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The price of “jajangmyeon,” a Chinese-Korean fusion dish of noodles in black bean sauce, is now 60 times higher than 50 years ago, data showed Wednesday.
The average price of a single bowl of jajangmyeon this year was 6,361 won (US$4.82).
The price of jajangmyeon was no more than 100 won in 1970, increasing to 2,500 won in 2000 and over the last five years, the price has gone up by a whopping 26.9 percent, according to the data data compiled by Korea Price Information Corp.
The price hike is largely attributed to the rising price of primary ingredients.
The KPI showed that the price of wheat and cooking oil jumped by 46.9 percent and 33.2 percent, respectively, since 2018.
The prices of the ingredients jumped mostly due to inflation, the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
Onions and cucumbers are also significantly more expensive than before, with prices soaring 166.7 percent and 275 percent since 2018.
