Children’s Books, Secondhand Books Gain Popularity as Coronavirus Pandemic Drags On

SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Korea Bizwire)Social quarantine measures to curtail the spread of the coronavirus are prompting more people to read books.

E-commerce giant Wemakeprice reported a 49 percent jump in book sales between July and September.

Children’s books for homeschooling, in particular, were also in high demand as more schools have opted for remote education.

Among the top 10 best-selling books, nine were textbooks for the Korean language, English, and history, or schoolbooks for young children.

Growing interest in the coronavirus also led to a 62.4 percent increase in sales of books related to health and hobbies, as well as comic book sales, which jumped by 47 percent as more people are spending more time indoors.

Secondhand book sales jumped by 343 percent during the same period with a growing number of consumers opting to make frugal spending choices.
