SEOUL, June 6 (Korea Bizwire) – According to representatives from the home appliance industry, the market for electric vacuum cleaners is rapidly declining, to the tune of 2 million units annually. But amidst the decline, sales of robot and stick vacuum cleaners are on the rise. Since 2014, cordless vacuums have accounted for half of total market for vacuum cleaners.

This is a big improvement for cordless vacuum cleaners, which were once deemed as supplementary equipment for corded cleaners despite their convenience, due to their short battery life and weak performance. With better batteries and more powerful motors, however, these cordless cleaners are becoming more and more mainstream.

Korea’s market for cordless vacuum cleaners used to be monopolized by foreign brands, namely European, such as Electrolux of Sweden, England’s Dyson, and Philips of the Netherlands. But with the surging popularity of cordless cleaners, the market is gradually shifting.

LG Electronics is in fierce competition with Electrolux for the leading position in the market. Followed by its release of the CordZero Handstick in 2014, LG released a premium vacuum called the CordZero Cyking in early 2015. The CordZero series saw sales of 200,000 units from January 2015 to January 2016, doubling the previous annual figure.

Samsung Electronics also recently re-entered the market with its POWERstick in February – its first cordless vacuum cleaner since 2013.

Domestic brands are targeting customers with affordable pricing, convenient customer service, and the use of easily replaceable batteries.

However, competition is still stiff. Dyson, the global market leader, is a favorite among consumers, and its 2015 sales increased by 185 percent compared to the previous year.

“The market for corded vacuum cleaners is saturated, and companies are focusing more on cordless cleaners,” said an industry official. “Enhanced performance and a higher number of single-person households will further increase the demand for cordless vacuum cleaners.”
