SEOUL, Korea, April 8 (Korea Bizwire) – To protect consumers from false or overstated displays and advertisements regarding eco-friendliness, the Ministry of Environment announced a new revision of the enforcement ordinance for the “Environmental Technology and Environmental Industry Act”. This revision is consisted of regulations regarding targets, acts, fines, and other details.
The main contents of the revision of the enforcement ordinance for “Environmental Technology and Environmental Industry Act” are as follows: The examples of false or overstated displays and advertisements regarding eco-friendliness are suggested, and the procedures and methods to prove the violation of the regulation are explained. Also, how the penalty and fines are calculated is addressed.
The Ministry of Environment will make sure to provide a full support to the enforcement of the law in September 2014. Part of the plan is to provide “Standard Environmental Guidelines upon Presenting Display or Advertisement with Incorrect Environmental Information.”
Especially, in order to make sure to achieve effective management and supervision of the products disguised to be eco-friendly, the Ministry of Environment will entrust related operations to the Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute which has accumulated expertise in environmental assessment and management of products through running the “Eco-Labeling” scheme.
The Eco-Labeling scheme certified by the government can be a useful tool to determine whether a product is in disguise of being green or not, which can protect consumers from falling victims to deceptive displays and ads. Eco-Labeling contains “the Ministry of Environment” in written texts at the bottom of the design to build credibility.
A Ministry of Environment official said, “As the new law takes effect, we expect it will prevent consumer losses from products touted to be eco-friendly, and regain consumer confident regarding green products improving the demands for them in turn.”
