SEOUL, Oct. 1 (Korea Bizwire) With plants becoming increasingly popular in the household due to their air purifying ability and emotionally pacifying effects, indoor plant pot design has become more diverse than ever.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, over 240 patents related to the design of flower and plant pots have been applied for on average per year during the last three years.

Experts say that the steady rise in the popularity of household plants may stem from the younger segment of the population who have heightened interest in pursuing indoor gardening.

Over 150,000 photos with the hashtag “planterior” have been posted on the social media favorite Instagram.

“Planterior” is a newly coined phrase that combines “plant” and “interior” and expresses the eco-friendly nature of interior design that makes use of plants as decoration.

In addition, the number of amateur clubs both online and offline that share plant growing techniques with their members are on the rise.

Plant cafes are also appearing throughout the nation’s cities. Social commentators say that such changes are due to the growth in the number of single-person households, along with the awareness of environmental issues sparked by increased fine dust levels.

Newer plant pot patents incorporate IoT technology that can automatically control temperature and humidity levels.

Other innovative pots that are in the works include pots that can be attached to windows, walls and verandas.
