Heat Wave Breaks Parasols’ Reputation as Exclusively for Middle-aged Women

SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Korea Bizwire)Parasols, once a symbol associated mainly with middle-aged women, are spreading across the country with the unprecedented heat wave.

Parasol sales at boutiques in Hyundai Department Store between July 25 and 31 surged by 107 percent compared to last year.

Lotte Department Store also experienced a 45 percent increase in parasol sales from July 21 to 31, compared to the previous year.

Online shopping mall Gmarket reported last month on their parasol sales chart that the growth rate among male customers was 12 percent, exceeding that of women at 5 percent.

When sorted by age, the spike in parasol sales was primarily driven by individuals in their 30s and 40s, who are more socially active than other age groups, as they purchased 11 percent more parasols than the previous year.
