SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Korea Bizwire)Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) from Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Corp. are selling well despite the global popularity of EVs.

Hyundai Motor Group reported that since PHEVs were first released in 2015, the average annual sales growth reached 106.8 percent, easily surpassing EV’s annual sales growth of 68.4 percent.

Hyundai sold PHEVs in South Korea until 2020 when subsidies were cut off. Now, the company sells them in the U.S. and European markets and is still seeing growth in sales.

Among major PHEVs, Hyundai had sold 43,828 units of Tucson, 20,888 units of Sorento, 14,626 units of Santa Fe, 14,349 units of Sportage and 5,830 units of new Niro as of July.

Considering that more than 10,000 PHEVs are sold monthly, the total number of PHEVs sold seems to have exceeded the 100,000 units milestone early this month.

Among Hyundai’s eco-friendly car sales, PHEVs increased in share from 1.9 percent in 2015 to 14 percent last year. This year, PHEVs accounted for 13.3 percent of all sales as of July.
