Individual Spending on Wedding Props Drops as Small Weddings Gain Popularity

SEOUL, May 3 (Korea Bizwire)With the popularity of small weddings on the rise amid the coronavirus pandemic, individual consumers are spending less on wedding-related items.

Major online shopping mall Gmarket reported a 36 percent decrease in the average amount of spending on wedding-related goods between January 1 and April 27 compared to the same period last year.

Average spending on wedding shoes dropped by 43 percent, and wedding car decorations by 36 percent, while spending on corsages and boutonnieres dropped by 25 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

However, overall sales of wedding-related goods actually increased, alluding to speculation that couples who had been postponing their weddings due to the pandemic are restarting their preparations.

Total wedding shoe sales jumped by 314 percent during the aforementioned period. Overall sales of wedding car decorations (25 percent), corsages (27 percent), and boutonnieres (127 percent) also increased.
