INJE, Apr. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – Inje County in Gangwon Province, South Korea, has unveiled a smart farm greenhouse facility that utilizes renewable energy sources to cultivate subtropical plants. The county announced the completion of the project and its opening to the public on April 16.
Covering an area of approximately 4,950 square meters, the smart farm greenhouse is located in the Wolgak-ri area of Inje’s Buk-myeon township. The facility features four distinct zones: a subtropical plant exhibition area, a hands-on smart bed for practical training, a testing bed for pilot projects, and other demonstration areas.
The greenhouse incorporates cutting-edge environmental control systems and is equipped with heating facilities that harness waste heat from the nearby environmental resource center’s incineration process, as well as solar power.
Inje County embarked on this “Smart Farm Greenhouse Utilizing Renewable Energy” project in 2021 after being selected for Gangwon Province’s regional balanced development pilot program. Over the course of four years, the county has invested a total of 2.14 billion won, including 1.1 billion won from national and provincial government subsidies and 1 billion won from its own budget.
The smart farm project has garnered praise for transforming the environmental resource center from a facility often viewed negatively into a revenue-generating model by leveraging renewable energy.
Going forward, Inje County plans to integrate the smart farm with horticultural therapy and healing agriculture programs, utilizing the facility as a diverse experiential learning center.
The greenhouse will be open for public viewing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Lim Seon-mi, the director of Inje County’s Agricultural Technology Division, stated, “The smart farm will serve as a hub for the advancement of cutting-edge agricultural industries.” She added, “With the goal of increasing local farmers’ income, we will strive to promote and disseminate advanced farming techniques.”
