SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) – ‘Kopan’, a dessert-snack bread from South Korea’s leading confectionery Paris Baguette, has won over customers in Korea after explosive popularity first in France, a company official said on Tuesday.
Short for Korean pan, Kopan was served as a dessert at the Korea-France summit dinner in Paris held in November last year. Because its pronunciation is similar to ‘copain’, a French word for friend, many view it as symbolic of amicable relations between Korea and France.
The bread gained attention domestically after creating a buzz on social networking services from individuals who tried it at French stores.
One million Kopans were sold in the month following the treat’s release in South Korea in August, and sales hit the 10-million mark as of Thursday. In France, Kopan reached the 10-million mark nine months after its release.
