SEOUL, May 5 (Korea Bizwire) — KT Corp., a major South Korean mobile carrier, announced that it is using telematics technology to prevent network disruptions that may occur due to excavation work.
In the latter half of this year, the telecom operator will connect its outside plant (OSP) management system with the telematics platforms of HD Hyundai Infracore Co. and HD Hyundai Construction Equipment Co.
KT will collect location information on construction sites and notify construction companies via text messages if optical cables are buried in the vicinity.
Additionally, it will develop a mobile application that allows users to check how many communication cables are buried near construction sites.
According to KT, there were 773 incidents of communication cable damage caused by construction and civil engineering work in the past two years, with an estimated average of 5,200 damage reports received annually.
Excavation-related damage caused by excavators and auger cranes accounted for about 70 percent of the total.
