LPG Tanks Get a Safety Inspection Makeover

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy described the initiative as a preemptive safety measure, noting that the decline in use of LPG tanks is believed to result in tanks being put aside and forgotten, or increased usage of tanks that have not been inspected. (Image: Yonhap)

SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Korea Bizwire)After 54 years, LPG tanks are going from the ubiquitous dark grey with dull, red lettering to a near-white grey with a bolder, red “LPG”.

The paint jobs are part of a five-year government initiative to run safety inspections on the 8.2 million LPG tanks in the country. By painting inspected tanks a different color, inspectors can avoid making the mistake of examining the same tank twice.

Inspections will begin first in Jeju and be expanded nationwide in the first half of next year.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy described the initiative as a preemptive safety measure, noting that the decline in use of LPG tanks is believed to result in tanks being put aside and forgotten, or increased usage of tanks that have not been inspected.

LPG providers, civic groups, municipal governments and the Korea Gas Corporation will participate in the government’s initiative.
