SEOUL, Jan.11 (Korea Bizwire) – After the start of the new year, many are redecorating their homes, leading to booming sales for companies specializing in interior decor.
According to the online shopping site GMarket, the sales of home decoration items and furniture doubled compared to last year. The phenomenon is seen to result from the growing interest in interior design and remodeling due to the popularity of TV programs related to DIY home decoration.
The sales of living items related to storage and cleaning at GMarket from December 31, 2015 to January 6, 2016 showed a 15 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Of note, the sales of items related to clothing organization such as hangers and covers more than doubled (111 percent increase).
Mops and cleaning sheets showed a 53 percent increase in sales, while trash cans and recycling bins also showed a 53 percent rise in sales.
Sales of DIY furniture and items that help to change a home’s atmosphere easily increased 10 percent during the same period.
The number of people who were preparing to redo the interior of their homes also took a leap.
The sales of sinks during the past week increased 32 percent compared to last year, and items to redecorate the bathroom almost doubled (92 percent increase).
GMarket officials comment that the new trend of ‘staying home’ such as ‘staycations’ (spending vacation at home) and ‘homescaping’ (escaping reality at home) boosted the demand for home decoration items.
