SEOUL, Jan. 30 (Korea Bizwire) – A recent study has found that while physical activity during leisure time, such as exercise, can improve health and work productivity, the physical exertion associated with job-related activities might actually have detrimental effects on health.

The research, conducted by professor Kang Mo-yeol and his team from the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Catholic University of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, was published in the latest issue of the international journal ‘Epidemiology and Health’. The study analyzed data from 5,501 working adults in South Korea.

Commenting on the study, Kang highlighted the dual nature of physical activity, stating, “Exercise can improve physical and mental health, thereby increasing work capability and labor productivity. However, excessive physical strain in the workplace can lead to the opposite effect, deteriorating health and ultimately reducing work capacity and productivity.”

The study also discovered that workers over 60 who engage in significant physical activity at work experience a decrease in work capability and productivity if they undertake additional physical activities, such as exercise, during their leisure time.

Kang advised, “For those over 60 who already face substantial physical demands at work, it may be beneficial to avoid excessive physical activities during their leisure time.”
