SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean game developers are increasingly turning to Taiwan as a ‘forward base’ before hitting the global markets in China and Southeast Asia.

Kakao Games, the game developing unit of South Korean mobile giant Kakao, decided to launch “Odin: Valhalla Rising,” the company’s newest mobile massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Lionheart Studio, in Taiwan.

The announcement comes even before the release dates are confirmed.

Some developers are choosing to release new games in Taiwan earlier than in South Korea.

The mobile version of MGAME Corp.’s “Scions of Fate,” for one, was launched in Taiwan this Thursday. Webzen Inc.’s “MU Archangel” was launched in Taiwan in February, three months before the official release in South Korea.

Gevolution, a local mobile app analysis platform, shows that Gravity Co.’s “Ragnarok Origin” and NCSOFT Corp.’s “Lineage M” are retaining second and third place on Taiwan’s Google Playstore.

Netmarble Corp.’s online baseball game “MaguMagu” ranked first on the Apple App Store’s free game charts in Taiwan following its release last month. The game has also topped sales charts.

Experts claim that Taiwan’s culture of “easy spending on games” is allowing Taiwan’s gaming market to grow exponentially.

“Taiwan shows a high level of average revenue per user (ARPU), and consumers are less reluctant to spend on games,” said the Korea Creative Content Agency.

“Taiwan, although a part of the Chinese cultural sphere, prefers Korean and Japanese content as well as Korean and Japanese voice on games.”
